Understanding the different steps, approaches and contributions can help prepare you for the editorial process and give you an appreciation for the collaborative nature of creating a successful picture book.
Developmental Editing – This is the first stage of the editorial process. Here, the editor focuses on the big picture. They help you refine your story’s structure, plot, pacing, character development and theme. Their feedback will generally be broad and can guide you in strengthening your narrative’s core elements.
Line Editing – Once your story’s foundation is solid, a line editor will polish your prose at the sentence and paragraph level They’ll ensure your syntax is correct and your language is clear, concise, and engaging for young readers. This involves fine-tuning sentence structure, word choice, and overall readability. Developmental and line editing are different stages of the process but are typically handled by the same editor.
Copy Editing – A copy editor is a specialist whose job is to catch any remaining errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling. They also check for factual accuracy and consistency in style and formatting, ensuring your manuscript is error-free and professional.
Proofreading – The final stage before publication involves a thorough proofread. This is the last line of defense against any lingering mistakes. Proofreaders meticulously review your manuscript to ensure it’s perfect.
Independent Editors – All of the above are built into the traditional publishing process. But you can also hire independent editors in each of these categories to review your manuscript for quality and professionalism prior to submitting for representation or publication consideration. Just be sure that the editor you hire has experience with the type of book you write, i.e. if you write in verse, make sure you select a line editor with experience editing verse.
