How to Assess the Value of a Picture Book Course

Hello, dear writers! Today, I want to dive into a topic that’s close to my heart: how to assess the value of a children’s book writing course. As writers, we’re always seeking to improve our craft and learn new skills, but with so many courses out there, it can be challenging to determine which ones are worth our time and investment. Here are a few key factors to consider:

  1. Credentials of the Instructor: One of the first things to look at is the credentials of the instructor. Do they have experience writing and publishing children’s books? Have they taught writing courses before? A course taught by someone with a strong background in children’s literature and publishing is likely to be more valuable.
  2. Course Content: Look closely at the course content. Does it cover the fundamentals of writing for children, such as character development, plot structure, and dialogue? Does it offer practical tips and techniques for improving your writing? A course that provides a comprehensive overview of children’s book writing is more likely to be beneficial.
  3. Feedback and Support: Consider what kind of feedback and support the course offers. Is there an opportunity to receive personalized feedback on your writing? Are there opportunities to connect with other writers and form a supportive community? Courses that offer a supportive environment can greatly enhance your learning experience.
  4. Fit with Your Schedule: Do you prefer a set time to work each week, or would you rather be flexible? Do you want to take it leisurely or learn as quickly as you can? If flexibility is important to you, an “asynchronous” self-study course may be the best fit.
  5. Cost vs. Value: Of course, cost is an important factor to consider. However, it’s essential to weigh the cost against the value you’ll receive. A course that offers valuable insights and skills that can help you advance your writing career may be worth the investment.

Now, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention my own courses on children’s book writing. I have over 30 years of experience in the industry, and have written and published over 30 books across multiple formats and for children of all ages. I’ve been a professor of Creative Writing at Stony Brook University at both the graduate and undergraduate level for over 15 years. I’ve created courses that cover everything from the basics of writing for children to advanced techniques for crafting compelling stories. My self-study courses offer you total flexibility while providing everything you need to take your writing to the next level.

If you’re serious about writing children’s books, I invite you to explore my courses and see if they’re the right fit for you. Remember, investing in your writing education is investing in your future as a children’s book author. Happy writing!
