What Students Say

Student Testimonial

Emma’s guidance and insight throughout the essay process was invaluable. From helping brainstorm ideas to the final edits, Emma was there to support our daughter every step of the way. We are grateful for Emma’s wisdom and know the scholarship our daughter was awarded was in large part due to her incredible essay.

I was accepted into Skidmore College in Saratoga, my first choice! Thank you so much for all your help with my essay as it really displayed me as a person and all of my interests. I really appreciate it and couldn’t have done it without your help.

My daughter Nina had a strong draft of her Common App essay to share, but the big picture view, smart questions, and thoughtful attention to specific details, which Emma brought to help Nina artfully shape her 600-word story not only tightened it but made it ‘sing’. Emma helped Nina find the ‘arc’ of her essay, the pivotal transitional moment, and to look carefully at which sentences to elaborate on, or which ones could be omitted – reminding her of the old writers’ adage ‘show don’t tell’. Most importantly, Emma guided Nina to make sure her essay would articulate to admissions officers who Nina is, and offer a sense of her character, so that they would remember her. Emma’s insights as an author, editor, poet, playwright, teacher, director – coupled with her warmth, humor, and positivity - all combine to make a traditionally grueling, stress-filled process, become a surprisingly joyful, illuminating, creative one.

Ms. Hamilton's editing suggestions markedly improved [our daughter's] essay’s structure and flow. Just as important as her knowledge, she is engaged, readily accessible and takes a constructive, team-oriented approach. On a personal level, she is empathetic, warm, and kind. She is the smart 'third parent' we all wish for our kids, the one to whom they actually listen. My daughter was accepted early decision to the college of her choice. According to an admissions committee member, her essay was highly regarded and a critical component of her successful application. We can’t thank Ms. Hamilton enough!

Frequently Asked Questions

Ideally, the summer before senior year. This gives us time to brainstorm, draft, and revise without the pressure of looming deadlines. However, I work with students at all stages - even those with fast-approaching deadlines. The earlier we start, the more polished your essays will be.

Absolutely not. I provide editorial guidance, structural feedback, and line editing—but every word must be your own. Admissions officers can detect essays that don't reflect the student's authentic voice, and more importantly, the essay is an opportunity for you to discover and articulate who you are. My role is to help you tell your story as powerfully as possible.

Comprehensive editing packages include multiple rounds of feedback - typically 3-4 passes per essay, depending on where you start. Brainstorming sessions and final polish services are structured differently. We'll discuss the right approach for your needs and timeline during our initial consultation

Yes, I regularly work with international students applying to U.S. colleges. I understand the unique challenges of conveying cultural context and can help you craft essays that translate across borders while preserving your authentic voice and perspective.
