How Writers Find the Right Agent

Writers often imagine that securing an agent is like winning a golden ticket — one magical “yes” that changes everything overnight. In reality, finding the right literary agent is usually a slower and more thoughtful process built on research, persistence, professionalism, and compatibility.

The first step is understanding that not every agent is right for every writer. Agents develop highly specific tastes and specialties. Some love literary picture books. Others gravitate toward commercial middle grade or dark contemporary YA. Some are highly editorial and deeply involved in revision, while others focus more heavily on contracts and submission strategy. The relationship works best when both author and agent genuinely connect with each other’s vision.

That means writers need to do their homework. It’s important to study agency websites, interviews, social media, conference appearances, and client lists. Read the books agents represent. Pay attention to what excites them. Publishing is subjective, and the more strategically targeted a submission is, the greater the likelihood of a meaningful response. Remember, too, that a pass from one agent at an agency typically constitutes a pass from the entire agency – so it’s important to choose the one most likely to respond to your work, otherwise you might waste a golden opportunity.

Once queries go out, patience becomes essential, especially in today’s market. Agents are inundated with submissions. Rejection — or silence — is part of the process for every published author.

But when the fit is right, the relationship can be transformative. A strong agent doesn’t simply sell a manuscript. They help shape careers, strategize long-term goals, negotiate contracts, and advocate for authors throughout the publishing process.

The goal is not simply to “get an agent.” The goal is to find the right creative and professional partner.
